Hanna Hedman

Here is the case of a talented jewellery designer with an impressive body of work that would have escaped our attention wouldn’t it be for the fact that she was introduced recently to Pop Up Uau!. We very welcomed the opportunity because Hanna Hedman, Stockholm based Swedish designer, has a consistency in her pieces that is very uncommon to see in new designers. She works since 2008 mostly with metals as silver (also oxidized) and copper, that are painted  using a similar approach thoroughly across all the collections with occasional use of synthetic fibers and textiles.

Her choice of rough appearances and atypical compositions seemed for us as they go into naturalisms and fears of apocalyptical scenarios, that more than aesthetics, they were attempting a diagnostic of our time by a certain exploration of environmental related themes and concepts. It gave us at first look that feeling of facing something simultaneously strange and seductive, yet meaningful. Hedman talks in her last collection about “responsibility that the humans hold”. Memento jewellery in her own words, as the word environment does no longer stands to its meaning. There is no more nature surrounding us as the etymologies might still refer but on the contrary we had environed nature, its life and resources. It may be that Hedman’s work is pointing out to that moment in time were this relation to the natural may be irreversibly gone and the objects presented will have the function of reminders.

A short philosophical detour worth revisiting if you are in the mood for going a bit beyond the usual considerations about jewellery that refer mostly to the beauty of the things wearable, minimizing therefore what these objects might have to say about our contemporary condition.
